1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Ongoing Program

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten ongoing program encourages you to read 1,000 books to your child before he or she enters kindergarten. Just read three books a day for one year and it will add up to over 1,000 books! Stop by Youth Services to register your child and pick up a reading log! (R)

Meet, Share, Play (newborn to 18 months)

Tuesday, January 6 • 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.

Parents, caregivers, grandparents! This is a special time for you to come and meet other people and their babies. Share your concerns, ideas, tips & experiences. (NR)

 

The Write Idea: Youth Creative Writing Club (Ages 8-12)

Tuesday, January 13 • 4:00 p.m.

We'll have fun using our imaginations to come up with stories that will spark our creativity. There will be writing games and journaling ideas. (R)

 

Lego Robotics: Drumming Monkey (Ages 9-14) 

Wednesday, January 14 • 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

With our new WeDo LEGO Construction Sets and software, you will be able to build and program your project. Meet in the main level Computer Room in the Adult Services Department. (R)

 

Polar Bear Storytime (Ages 3-6)

Wednesday, January 14 • 6:00 p.m.

Come in from the cold and enjoy this fun storytime with polar bear stories and a craft. (R)

 

Chat and Chew (Grades 3-5 or Ages 8-11)

Thursday, January 15 • 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Join us for a lively discussion about a great book. All who register can pick up the book that we will be discussing at the Youth Services Desk beginning December 15. (R)

 

Movie Night (G) (All Ages)

Thursday, January 15  • 6:00 p.m.

Drop-in for a movie! Meeting Room (NR)

 

Winter Family Fun Fest (All Ages)

Monday, January 19 through Friday, February 27

Visit the Youth Services Desk to receive a list of fun family activities to do together this winter, and pick up your special winter treat. Each child will receive a book and small prize when their list of activities is completed. Begins January 19. Last day to return lists is February 27. (R)

Snowflakes, Snowflakes, Snowflakes! (Ages 5-9)

Tuesday, January 20 • 4:00 p.m.

Join us as we make some beautiful snowflakes using pipe cleaners and beads that you will be able to hang from your window to capture the colors even more! (R)

 

Library Scavenger Hunt (Ages 8-11)

Wednesday, January 21 • 3:30 p.m.

Are you a good detective? Join our Library Scavenger Hunt and find out about different things at the library, both upstairs and down. Prizes will be given to the best detectives. (R)

 

Baby & Me (Ages 6-24 months)

Monday, January 26 • 9:30 a.m.

This is a special baby library time to share stories, songs, rhymes, and bounces. There will also be time after the storytime for parents to stay and play with their babies and to talk to each other. (R)

 

Lego Robotics: Cheerful Fans (Ages 9-14) 

Wednesday, January 28 • 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

With our new WeDo LEGO Construction Sets and software, you will be able to build and program your project. Meet in the main level Computer Room in the Adult Services Department. You must have done the Dancing Birds, Smart Spinners and Drumming Monkey to do this activity. (R)

 

 Science Club- Magnets! (Ages 8-14) 

Thursday, January 29 • 4:00 p.m.

What can you do with a magnet? Come and do some experiments that will have you playing with magnetic forces. (R)

 

Lego Club (Ages 5 and up)

Friday, January 30 • 3:45 p.m.

Use your imagination to build your own creation. We will display your project in the Youth Services Department. (R)

Alexander's Birthday! (Ages 3-7)

Monday, February 2 • 4:15 p.m.

Make Alexander's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day better by celebrating the author's birthday with stories, a craft and a small treat. (R)

Enjoy Valentine's Day stories and a heart craft. (R)

 

Paws to Read (Ages 6-10)

Saturday, February 7 • 11:00 a.m.

Grab a book and read to a dog! Officer Terry and K-9 Star and Holly the Collie will listen to you read. Reading to a dog is one way to build self-esteem and make a new friend. (R)

Listen to Valentine stories, create a seasonal craft and enjoy some treats. Our Valentine guest will be Holly the Collie, library dog. (R)

 

 Tangled Hearts with Christine Thornton (Ages 8 and up)

Saturday, February 14 • 1:00 p.m.

Christine Thornton shows us some new ways to draw hearts on this Valentine's Day. (R)

Google Earth (Ages 9 and up) 

Thursday, February 19 • 4:00 p.m.

Do you have an iPad that you can bring to the library? Download the Google Earth app at home (it's free), and then come to the library and participate in a fun scavenger hunt with us. Take flight over anywhere in the world, no pilot license necessary! (R)

Nature Club: Northwoods Animals (Ages 6-11)

Saturday, February 28 • 11:00 a.m.

Join us for nature facts, crafts and fun in this eco-friendly program. Each month has a different theme. (R)
