1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Ongoing Program

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten ongoing program encourages you to read 1,000 books to your child before he or she enters kindergarten. Just read three books a day for one year and it will add up to over 1,000 books! Stop by Youth Services to register your child and pick up a reading log! (R)

 

-NOVEMBER-

Baby and Me (Ages 6-24 months)

Tuesday, November 29 • 9:30 a.m.

This is a special library time to share stories, songs, rhymes and bounces. There will also be time after storytime for play and to talk to each other. (R)

 

Ozobot Time! (Ages 8-11)

Tuesday, November 29 • 4:00 p.m.

This little robot does some awesome things! You draw out the commands and it will do what you tell it to do. Come and experiment with programming your Ozobot! (R)

 

Sensory Storytime (All Ages) in the Meeting Room

Tuesday, November 29 • 6:00 p.m.

This storytime will engage children through stories, movement and music. The non-traditional storytime format is designed for children who have autism, difficulties with sensory processing, or simply sitting still. (R)

Lake County Author Showcase (All Ages)

Thursday, December 1 • 6:00 p.m.

Discover something new to read and share with your children and grandchildren. Local children's book authors will present their work, then stay to chat. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Light refreshments will be served. Featured authors: Lori Degman, Tina P. Schwartz, Papa V (NR)

 

American Girl Tea (Ages 6 & up)

Saturday, December 3 • 11:00 a.m.

Join us for our annual tea (cookies and lemonade) as we listen to holiday stories and make crafts. Bring your American Girl doll or another favorite. (R)

 

Drop-In and Get Crafty: Christmas (All Ages)

Saturday, December 3 • 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Stop by from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Activity Room and have fun making a craft to celebrate the holiday season. No registration necessary. (NR)

 

Preschool Picasso (Ages 3-5)

Tuesday, December 6 • 11:30 a.m.

Bring your preschooler for hands-on arts and crafts! Make sure to dress in clothes you don't mind getting messy or bring a smock. (R)

 

Silver Bells (Ages 4-7)

Wednesday, December 7 • 6:00 p.m.

Join us for this holiday storytime. (R)

 

Book Buzz (Ages 8 & up)

Thursday, December 8 • 4:00 p.m.

What's the buzz on books? Find out at this newly redesigned book club! Discuss books and graphic novels by sharing books that you have read over the past month or books that you love and want to share with others. A suggested list will be provided each month based no a theme or genre, but you do not have to read what is on the list. Lists will be at the youth reference desk as well as at each meeting. (R)

 

Sensory Friendly Movie Night (All Ages)

Thursday, December 8 • 6:00 p.m.

Join us for a sensory friendly movie. The lights will be comfrotable and the sound will be lower. Popcorn will be served but feel free to bring your own snack as well as other comfort items. This program is designed for children with special needs. All attendees must be accompanied by an adult/caregiver. This event will take place in the Meeting Room. (NR)

 

Toddler Art (Ages 1-2)

Join us December 14-18 to pick up some last minute stocking stuffers! The Book Fair will be in the Youth Activity Room and be open when the library opens and up to one hour before the library closes. (NR)

Winter Family Fun Fest (All Ages)

Saturday, January 21 - Saturday, February 25

Drop by the Youth Services Reference Desk to receive a list of fun family activities to do this winter, and pick up your special winter treat. Each child will receive a book and small prize after completing 10 of the suggested activities. Come back before February 25 with your list of finished activities for your prizes. For ages birth to age 14 and your family. (R)

 

My Little Pony Party (Ages 3-7)

Join us for everything My Little Pony! There will be crafts, food and fun! Get ready to PARTY! This program will take place in the Meeting Room. (R)

With our WeDo Lego Construction Sets and software, you will be able to build and program your project. *You must have done the Dancing Birds, Smart Spinner and Drumming Monkey projects to be able to do any of the other projects. (R)

 

Science Club- Get Going! (Ages 8-14)

Have fun with science as we build some moveable contraptions! (R)

 

Paws to Read (All Ages)

Holly Collie wishes all a Happy New Year and invites you to read to her and her friends, Officer Terry and K9 Star. You can read, make up a story or just visit with these amazing canines. Books are provided or bring one of your favorites to read. (R)

Graphic Novel Book Club (Ages 8 & up)

Thursday, February 9 • 4:00 p.m.

Join us for a lively discussion about great graphic novels. This month we will be discussing manga. Feel free to read a manga this month or share any graphic novel that you really enjoy with the group. (R)

 

Pokemon Night (All Ages)

Thursday, February 9 • 6:00 p.m.

Come in to watch a movie. While you are here bring your DS, 2DS or 3DS to play your Pokemon games against others or even bring in your Pokemon cards to play or showoff. No registration required. This is a drop-in program that will take place in the Meeting Room. (NR)

 

Will You Be My Valentine? (Ages 5-9)

Thursday, February 9 • 6:00 p.m.

Holly Collie, library dog, will be your Valentine with a valentine just for you. Join Holly as we read Valentine stories, create a special craft and enjoy treats. (R)

 

Christine Thornton Presents Tangled Valentines (Ages 7 & up)

Saturday, February 11 • 1:00 p.m.

Tangling is a popular form of doodling that's fun and relaxing. Come learn about tangling and make a beautiful Valentine with Christine's guidance and your own creativity. Can be made into a card, given as a gift, or kept for yourself! (R)

What a great way to spend the afternoon! We will have lots of LEGO's for you to build most anything your imagination will allow. Drop-in. (NR)

Winter is here and where are the animals? The birds? What are the trees doing? We investigate winter and find out what is happening in nature during the cold months with some books (stories) and crafts. (R)

 

Mardi Gras (Ages 5 & up)

Saturday, February 25 • 1:00 p.m. 

Students from the Round Lake High School French Club will present a fun Mardi Gras program. Learn some French and enjoy the Mardi Gras celebration. (R)
